Our Story

Boreal Company Holdings was founded in 2023 in response to the pressing climate change and biodiversity challenges facing our planet. Many recognize the potential for nature-based solutions to contribute towards carbon removal, but few projects focus on restoring boreal forest ecosystems in the northern hemisphere covering vast expanses across Canada, Scandinavia and Siberia.

In 2022 in recognition of the importance of boreal forests to its way of life, the Mongolian government launched an initiative to increase the country’s forest cover by 6 million ha over the next decade. Boreal Company Holdings was launched with the aim of supporting these efforts through private investment reversing the impact of climate change, increasing bio-diversity and supporting local communities.

About

Our Approach

Guiding Principles

At Boreal Company Holdings, we generate financial, social and environmental returns by restoring boreal forest land in partnership with the local community.

We target areas that have been deforested through, for example, overgrazing, fires, disease or pest infestations. We plant indigenous tree species to increase forest coverage while enhancing biodiversity and restoring ecosystems.

By partnering with local communities, we provide direct and indirect job opportunities as well as a competitive, sustainable source of income via carbon credits contributing to climate resilience.

Project Development

Step 1

Project Identification

Our carbon projects take place in areas where the land has been previously deforested or degraded. We evaluate the project for both opportunity, for example carbon removal, community interest and expected impact; and risk, for example, country risk, local capacity and infrastructure.

Step 2

Project Design

After a project site has been selected, we work with local and international organizations to design the key parameters of the project including carbon sequestration, tree planting and forest management approach and ongoing monitoring mechanisms.

Step 3

Project Engagement

As part of the project design, we engage with local communities and indigenous people who live on or near the area for planting, or make use of the planting area for economic, religious or social purposes to ensure the project provides sustainable benefits.

Step 4

Project Execution

After design and stakeholder engagement, we enter into land agreements and partner with investors and carbon credit off takers to finance restoration activities. Our vertically integrated business model means we are responsible for everything from landowner engagement to seed collection, sapling production, planting and forest management.

Step 5

Project Monitoring

Once the project starts issuing credits, we continue to monitor and collaborate with landowners to ensure permanence for the communities as well as the buyers of the carbon credits. Boreal projects generate the highest quality carbon credits, with significant co-benefits for local communities and aligned to the most rigorous third-party standards.
